Chinese companies help South Africa transition to clean energy

According to a South African independent online news website report on July 4, China’s Longyuan wind power project provided lighting for 300,000 households in South Africa.According to reports, like many countries in the world, South Africa is struggling to obtain enough energy to meet the needs of a growing population and industrialization.

Last month, South African Power Minister Kosienjo Ramokopa revealed at the China-South Africa New Energy Investment Cooperation Conference in Sandton, Johannesburg that South Africa is seeking to boost its Renewable energy capacity, China is an increasingly close political and economic partner.

According to reports, the conference was co-hosted by the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products, the South Africa-China Economic and Trade Association and the South African Investment Agency.

The report also said that during a recent visit to China by several South African media representatives, senior officials of the China National Energy Group emphasized that although the development of clean energy is inevitable, the process should not be rushed or placed in a position to please Western investors. under pressure.

China Energy Group is the parent company of Longyuan Power Group Co., Ltd. Longyuan Power is responsible for the development and operation of the De A wind power project in the Northern Cape Province, providing renewable energy and helping the government to implement the emission reduction and energy conservation stipulated in the Paris Agreement. duty.

Guo Aijun, leader of Longyuan Power Company, told South African media representatives in Beijing: “Longyuan Power was established in 1993 and is now the world’s largest wind power operator. listed.”

He said: “At present, Longyuan Power has become a large-scale comprehensive power generation group focusing on the development and operation of wind power, photovoltaic, tidal, geothermal and other renewable energy sources, and has a complete industry technical support system.”

Guo Aijun said that in China alone, Longyuan Power’s business is spread all over the place.

“As one of the earliest state-owned enterprises in China to set foot in the field of wind power, we have operating projects in South Africa, Canada and other places. By the end of 2022, China Longyuan Power’s total installed capacity will reach 31.11 GW, including 26.19 GW of wind power, photovoltaic and other 3.04 GW of renewable energy.”

Guo Aijun said that one of the highlights is that the Chinese company assisted its South African subsidiary Longyuan South Africa in completing the first large-scale renewable energy project emission reduction transaction.

According to the report, China Longyuan Power’s South Africa De-A project won the bid in 2013 and was put into operation at the end of 2017, with a total installed capacity of 244.5 MW. The project provides 760 million kWh of clean electricity every year, which is equivalent to saving 215,800 tons of standard coal and can meet the electricity demand of 300,000 local households.

In 2014, the project won the Excellent Development Project of the South African Wind Energy Association. In 2023, the project will be selected as a classic case of the “Belt and Road” renewable energy project.
