The International Energy Agency (IEA) recently released a report on the 30th titled “Affordable and Fair Clean Energy Transformation Strategy,” emphasizing that accelerating the transition to clean energy can lead to cheaper energy costs and alleviate consumer living expenses. This report highlights that clean energy technologies often surpass traditional fuel-based technologies in terms of cost competitiveness over their life cycles. Specifically, solar and wind power have emerged as the most cost-effective new energy sources available. Additionally, while the initial cost of electric vehicles (including two-wheeled and three-wheeled models) can be higher, they generally offer savings through lower operating expenses.
The IEA report stresses the consumer benefits of increasing the share of renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Currently, nearly half of consumer energy spending goes towards petroleum products, with another third dedicated to electricity. As electric vehicles, heat pumps, and electric motors become more prevalent in transportation, construction, and industrial sectors, electricity is expected to overtake petroleum products as the primary energy source in end-use energy consumption.
The report also outlines successful policies from various countries, suggesting several measures to expedite the adoption of clean energy technologies. These measures include implementing energy efficiency upgrade programs for low-income households, providing public sector funding for more efficient heating and cooling solutions, promoting energy-saving appliances, and ensuring affordable clean transportation options. Enhanced support for public transportation and the second-hand electric vehicle market is also recommended.
Fatih Birol, the Executive Director of the IEA, underscored that the data clearly indicates that accelerating the clean energy transition is the most cost-effective strategy for governments, businesses, and households. According to Birol, making energy more affordable for a broader population hinges on the pace of this transition. He argues that speeding up the shift to clean energy, rather than delaying it, is the key to reducing energy costs and making energy more accessible to everyone.
In summary, the IEA’s report advocates for a rapid transition to renewable energy as a means to achieve cost savings and reduce the economic burden on consumers. By drawing from effective international policies, the report provides a roadmap for accelerating clean energy adoption. The emphasis is on practical steps such as enhancing energy efficiency, supporting clean transportation, and investing in renewable energy infrastructure. This approach promises not only to make energy cheaper but also to foster a more sustainable and equitable energy future.
