Recently, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company TAQA plans to invest 100 billion dirhams, approximately US$10 billion, in a 6GW green hydrogen project in Morocco. Prior to this, the region had attracted projects worth more than Dh220 billion.
These include:
1. In November 2023, Moroccan investment holding company Falcon Capital Dakhla and French developer HDF Energy will invest an estimated US$2 billion in the 8GW White Sand Dunes project.
2. Total Energies subsidiary Total Eren’s 10GW wind and solar projects worth AED 100 billion.
3. CWP Global also plans to build a large-scale renewable ammonia plant in the region, including 15GW of wind and solar energy.
4. Morocco’s state-owned fertilizer giant OCP has committed to investing US$7 billion to build a green ammonia plant with an annual output of 1 million tons. The project is expected to start in 2027.
However, the above-mentioned projects are still in the early development stage, and developers are waiting for the Moroccan government to announce the Hydrogen Offer plan for hydrogen energy supply. In addition, China Energy Construction has also signed a green hydrogen project in Morocco.
On April 12, 2023, China Energy Construction signed a memorandum of cooperation on the green hydrogen project in the southern region of Morocco with Saudi Ajlan Brothers Company and Moroccan Gaia Energy Company. This is another important achievement achieved by China Energy Engineering Corporation in developing overseas new energy and “new energy +” markets, and has achieved a new breakthrough in the northwest African regional market.
It is reported that the project is located in the coastal area of the southern region of Morocco. The project content mainly includes the construction of a production plant with an annual output of 1.4 million tons of green ammonia (approximately 320,000 tons of green hydrogen), as well as the construction and post-production of supporting 2GW photovoltaic and 4GW wind power projects. Operation and maintenance, etc. After completion, this project will provide stable clean energy to the southern region of Morocco and Europe every year, reduce electricity costs, and contribute to the green and low-carbon development of global energy.
